d'Omah Hotel Yogyakarta is located in the village of Tembi in rural Java - but only twenty minutes from the centre of this bustling artistic city governed by a Sultan. Tembi was just a typical Javanese village until Indonesia's handicraft guru Warwick Purser decided to move there and establish the design, production and export facilities of his company Out of Asia. The purpose was to explore how a rural community and a commercial enterprise could work hand in hand to each group’s benefit. Profiled in TIME Magazine and many other international and national media, Tembi is now one of Indonesia's major bases for handicraft production. Recently Tembi has also become a centre of art, with young overseas artists taking up temporary residence and working together with their local contemporaries. TheTembi Contemporary Gallery has been established and is already well known for its efforts to promote the work of young Yogyakarta artists. Despite these new influences Tembi remains a traditional Javanese village with the early morning prayer call from the mosque, the sound of ducks and geese playing in the water and farmers harvesting the rice.
